About Astanga:
Astanga Vinyasa Yoga in the tradition of Sri K Pattabhi Jois, is a practice of correct breathing (Ujjayi Pranayama), postures (asana)
and gazing points (driste). "Vinyasa" means breath-synchronised movement and is used to link the asana together in precise order.
By synchronising movement with breathing and practising Mula and Uddiyana Bandhas (internal locks), an intense internal heat
is produced in the body. Each posture provides preparation for the next one in the series, which allows the body to open safely.
Strength, stamina and sweat are unique aspects of this traditional yoga system. It is a demanding practice that requires considerable
effort and dedication, but one that brings enormous benefit to the body and mind.
Self-practice is the traditional method of learning
Astanga Vinyasa Yoga and is the way that Sri K. Pattabhi Jois teaches in Mysore. In a Mysore-style class each student practices at their own
pace with assistance and adjustment from the teacher when necessary. The Astanga series are learnt and committed to memory posture by
posture. New postures are slowly added to the student's practice, so
that most of the time the student practices without being 'led' by a teacher.
Traditionally new students are introduced to Astanga yoga through the Mysore self-practice method,
so that they can gain individual attention from the teacher. I am dedicated to teaching Astanga
Vinyasa Yoga through the traditional methods and all students are warmly encouraged to establish a self-practice.
Drop in students from out of town with established practices are also welcome to all classes.
